About Georgia

Georgia (საქართველო Sak'art'velo), known officially from 1990 to 1995 as the Republic of Georgia (2014 est. pop.  4 490 500), is a country to the east of the Black Sea, most of which is located in the South Caucasus, while a portion of the territory lies in the North Caucasus. A former republic of the Soviet Union, it shares borders with Russia in the north and Turkey, Azerbaijan and Armenia in the south, area 69,700 sq km.

Georgia is an amazing cluster of cultures, religions, fascinating landscapes and ancient history. The country where everyone can find something to his soul- from snowy mountains to subtropical shores, from deserts to sumptuous forests, from cities to enchanting villages. Ethnic Georgians constitute a majority of the population.

The official language is Georgian, one of the oldest languages in the world.

Tbilisi is the capital and the largest city in Georgia

Geographic coordinates: 41-44C, 40-47B. The Republic of Georgia is situated in South Eastern Europe and forms the central and western part of the South Caucasus. It borders Russia in the north, Azerbaijan in the east and Armenia and Turkey in the south, with the Black Sea to the west.

Area: 69.7 sq. km. 20% of this territory is not under Georgian government control.

Climate: Georgia is subtropical in the west and between tropical and moderate in the east. Climate conditions across the country are significantly influenced by the Caucasus mountain range, which stretches from west to east. Thus, even the most remote regions of the country experience the warm air masses coming in from the Black Sea coast.

Population: 4, 385, 000 (according to 2009 census).

  • Catholicism (a minority of Georgians and Armenians) – 0.8 %;
